Darius Slay, the legendary cornerback and a Brunswick native, recently made a powerful impact on over 100 young athletes from the Golden Isles at the 2023 Big Play Slay Football Camp. Held at Glynn County Stadium, this event served as a testament to the endless possibilities that hard work and smart decision-making can bring.
With a remarkable 10-year career in the NFL, Slay has solidified his status as one of the greatest cornerbacks in history. His impressive record includes five Pro-Bowl selections, 513 tackles, 133 pass deflections, 26 interceptions, and four defensive touchdowns.
Having grown up in similar circumstances as the campers, Slay aimed to send a powerful message. "I want to show them that a kid from this small city can make it," Slay stated. "I've been in the league for a long time, and I want to make sure I show my face around here a lot. I want the kids to know that they can come from this place and achieve great things."
During the event, Slay received a framed Pirates jersey from Brunswick head coach Garrett Grady. He also took the time to capture special moments with fans, snapping photos and signing autographs. However, despite these moments of celebration, Slay's focus remained on the campers.
Throughout the day, Slay led various drills for both middle school and high school athletes. Joining him were esteemed football figures such as three-time Super Bowl winning running back LaGarrette Blount, two-time All-Pro cornerback Casey Hayward, and former first-round cornerback Greg Newsome II. Even NFL super agent Drew Rosenhaus made an appearance, urging the campers to follow Slay's remarkable example.
Darius Slay's impact extends far beyond his exceptional on-field performance. Through his dedication and commitment, he has become a role model for aspiring athletes everywhere.
